WFTDA Releases Portuguese Translation of The Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is excited to announce that The Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby have been translated into Portuguese. It’s available in PDF format on the WFTDA Rules Resources website at https://resources.wftda.org/rules/.

The Brazilian Portuguese translation sought to preserve the structure and literal meaning of the original English text as closely as possible, including the use of gender-neutral language when referring to participants. This choice presents specific challenges in Portuguese, since gender is marked in many words (including the colors themselves used to identify teams and athletes), and gender-neutral language is not yet standardized or widely agreed upon in Brazil, which may make the text less fluid for readers who are unfamiliar with it. A freer adaptation, changing sentence structure and replacing gender-marked terms, could result in a more natural text; however, at this initial stage, we chose to prioritize a more literal translation, remaining close to the original technical wording and its meaning.

We would like to thank the translation team for their hard work in providing this valuable asset to the community:
